Wow. Looks like we have a Homophobic Network Station on our hands. After winning his gold medal, Matthew Mitcham had an interview with him thanking his mum and partner. NBC had a clip of him winning and showed him in an interview on TV but decided to remove any mention of his partner or show the pic of him hugging his mum and bf. How Rude eh? Here is the story:After pulling off a last minute victory against the Chinese in the 10m dive, Mr Mitcham, while hugging his mother and his partner, he told reporters: "I want to thank absolutely everyone who helped; my partner Lachlan and my mum [Vivienne] here to support me and watch me get gold, because it was so important to have those two people here with me.
"I did not think I had a chance to get the gold and to actually get that was mind-blowing! I was crying thinking I had silver. And to get gold! I was a blubbering mess."
Despite intensive coverage by NBC of other Olympic athletes' families, Mr Mitcham's partner received virtually no attention during the network's coverage.
Cyd Zeigler of Outssports said: "It's a big story. The only openly gay male athlete in Beijing pulled off one of the great upsets at the Olympics in a spectacular fashion.
"If he had had cancer, or if his parents had been killed in a car crash when he was 2, or if he had just proposed to his girlfriend, they would have mentioned it. But they never showed him hugging his boyfriend, never mentioned it. They referred to 'personal problems,' but I'm afraid they decided Matthew’s sexuality was off limits. A real shame."

On the topic of the Olympics, the Lesbians are doing quite well themselves. Six of the 13 out lesbian and bisexual women competing at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing ended up winning gold, silver, or bronze medals. Not too bad eh? Its great to see the LGBTQ do well in the Olympics. Like Matthew, it gives us visibility and to show the world we are meant to be on this planet too.
Openly Gay Australian Swimmer Matthew Mitcham had a near-perfect dive to win Olympic gold on Saturday in front of a crowd that included his partner Lachlan Fletcher, he made history. Mitcham will go down as the most significant out male Olympic athlete ever. Its Olympics time and we have a bunch of athletes representing the gay community within the games. Many open gay/lesbian athletes are playing to achieve a gold medal to bring home for their country. Diver Matthew Mitcham, 20, is representing Australia in the men's 3 metre springboard competition on 18th August, and the men's 10 metre platform on 22nd August.Mitcham caused a stir recently when he came out in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald at the end of May.The diving star is the first out Australian to compete in the Olympic games.
Mitcham is not the only gay in the Olympic village.Natasha Kai, a forward on the U.S.A Women's football team, is an out lesbian. Kai, 25, joined the team in 2006.Hawaiin-born Kai first began playing football at the age of 7.Whilst at the University of Hawaii, Kai was awarded Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year three times.Kai is the first woman from Hawaii to make the U.S.A Women's National Team.Other lesbians at the games include Imke Duplitze, Olympic Fencing silver medalist, and German cyclist Judith Arndt.Arndt returns to the Olympics this year having won Bronze in the 1996 competition, and Silver in 2004, as well as the World Road Race Championship.Arndt is also famed for her angry outburst at the 2004 Olympics, brought on by the cutting of her partner and team mate Petra Rossner from the team.Both athletes were named Gay Games Ambassadors in 2005Further out lesbians at the games are Lauren Lappin and Vicky Galindo of the U.S.A Women's Softball team, Victoria Svensson of the Swedish football team, Linda Bresonik of the German football team, and Rennae Stubbs, representing Australia in tennis. Olympic Swimmer Ian Thorpe has be swarmed with gay rumours ever since he showed up on the scene. I am not sure why the rumours.. maybe its because he is a swimmer? Always in Speedos? I am not too sure.. Anyways, reports come in stating the swimmer is now dating a woman across the world. Hmmm.. why such a long distance romance?? Suspicious?? Nah!!For years, probably since his appearance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, many have been speculating, and most gay men have been hoping, that the Thorpedo—gold medal winner Ian Thorpe—was indeed a homo. Well, don’t count on it.This past weekend, in an interview with Australian paper The Sunday Telegraph, Thorpe was again vague about the gender of his new significant other. When asked if there was someone special in his life he said, "There is, but they don’t live in this country."That interview had the web buzzing that Thorpe might finally reveal more details about his private life, which he has famously kept to himself, probably part of the reason for the homospeculation.On Monday, however, all our Thorpe dreams were finally laid to rest.Web site News.AU.com reports that, in an interview with Women’s Day, Thorpe finally revealed the gender of his new love interest."I am in a new relationship and I am very happy; except she lives on the other side of the world."
